About our Farm and Horses

Draugen - Norwegian Fjord HorseSeveral years ago, when we first purchased our farm, we considered having horses; however, we wondered just what kind of horse would thrive in our long cold winters. We considered several different breeds before we settled on the gentle Norwegian Fjord horse. They are a hardy, easy-keeping breed, well-suited to our weather conditions.

These horses are one of the oldest purest breed of horse. Originally from the Fjord area of Western Norway, these gentle horses have made their way into the hearts of all who see them. With less than 8,000 horses registered in North America, they still remain a relatively uncommon breed. Most people remark that they look "primitive" when they first see them. They do retain the dun coloration, and primitive zebra markings on the legs, not to mention the mane, which is cut in an arch to Vedas galloping at county fairemphasize the neck, and to show off the black striping down the center. They are all considered "dun" colored, but they come in several color variations; such as: the brown dun (90% are this color), red dun, white dun, gray (grulla) and the rare yellow dun. See colors.

Fjord horses are known for their gentle dispositions, and are well suited to many different disciplines. They are used for riding, driving, draft and farm work and even have been shown successfully in dressage and reining. For more information on these lovely horses please visit the Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry.
